Crazy Potter Questions
Have wizards been to the moon? Can your horcrux be an individual grain of sand? How would Mr. Weasley react to Twitter? These questions all have one thing in common: there are no right answers. The Harry Potter universe is great since it is large and overarching, but many of the details have not been filled in. As such, it is possible for the fans to have a lighthearted and informal conversation about these questions. It would be a great chance for LeakyCon attendees to discuss these (admittedly ridiculous) questions and see what can be discovered!

The Mistreatment of Cordelia Chase
Cordelia Chase is one of the most fascinating characters of the Buffyverse. She goes from the stereotypically mean cheerleader in Buffy the Vampire Slayer to a beloved friend and hero on Angel. Then, in season four of Angel, the show began to play to a well-worn science fiction trope. This plot choice changed the character and had wider cultural implications that deserve to be discussed. Snape deserved something more than what he was shown to have. He did not have a pet or a family. Even with Charity Burbage's claim of friendship and the seemingly friendly rivalry between Snape and McGonagall, he was almost friendless. Harry and Dumbledore both have avian familiars, Bellatrix had Rodolphus, and even Voldemort had Nagini, so why did Snape not have someone or something like that? Come talk about Snape as a character, his hobbies, past choices, and what made him who he was.

Engaging in Positive Fandom: A Discussion
These days, fandom can be really exciting. Creators get instant feedback, fans can interact with the people they admire, and both interactions can create inspiring and fulfilling relationships. But how do we make sure to encourage those relationships to remain positive? What are appropriate and inappropriate ways to be a fan or have fans? How do fans remain positive and passionate without tipping into idolatry and obsession, and how do creators engage their audience without taking advantage of admiration and devotion?

These are going to be difficult questions to answer, and the leadership of LeakyCon and the HP Alliance have been looking for a way forward. This group of fans and creators want to hear your thoughts and ideas on the subject, as well as share some of their own experiences and thoughts. Improving the world of fan engagement for everyone is important, and we want to start the conversation on how to do it right here, right now, with you.

Redefining Humanity Through Wizards, Time Lords, and Zombies
In the modern era, humanity is constantly discovering new ways to enhance and extend the human life in manners never before dreamed possible. Stories such as Harry Potter, Doctor Who, and The Walking Dead have captured their audiences by forcing them to question what it means to be human. What is Voldemort’s most inhuman characteristic? How does the Wizarding World define “human”? What did the Last Human teach Rose about inhumanity? What makes the Doctor so definitively nonhuman? How do Rick and his companions navigate a changing definition of humanity during a zombie apocalypse? These are the focal points for this investigation into the very essence of humankind.

Lost in Translation- Is Magic a Universal Language?
Translating a book is never easy; translating Harry Potter is even worse. Made up words, alliterations, word play, and names with cultural and historical meanings - how do you translate them? Translators have to make choices, and different translators have made different choices. A German Harry Potter book is not the same as a Dutch one, or a Spanish one, and that does not even take non-European languages into consideration. Does the magic get lost in translation or is magic an universal language? Take a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly. Do jokes fall flat? Does a name lose meaning or has the translator created a beautiful word that perfectly matches its English counterpart?

We Survived the Harry Potter Ship Wars. Ask Us How?
No, really--ask us! Find out about the infamous Ron/Hermione vs. Harry/Hermione shipping wars from two who were on the front line. From the origins of ship names to the live ship debate at Nimbus 2003, this panel will either give you combat flashbacks to "the good old days," or have you laughing at the ridiculousness of snarking, trolling, pointing, and laughing. Sock puppeting and weeks-long debates about the exact usage of semicolons and Quidditch World Cup seating arrangements, all over the romantic pairing of three fictional teenagers. On a deeper level, we will also talk about how shipping and theorizing affected our opinions of the books, as expectations were fulfilled or dashed with each new book release, and how those experiences still shape our fandom today-- and how we managed to "survive" as Harry Potter fans through it all. Whether you are wanting to relive old times or find out what you missed out on, this panel will certainly be worth your time!

Fanfiction is a very polarizing topic. It seems that someone will either love or hate it and it can be difficult to express what the appeal of fanfic really is. As an author and occasional fanfic writer, I think it’s not only fun to read, it bolsters the creative mind and offers writers skills to add to their repertoire! This will be a silly, casual, but step-by-step talk outlining the things that make fanfic not just a fun hobby but actually beneficial to your writing career.

Snake Tales: How Spin Sullied Slytherin's Reputation
Hagrid’s warning of “There's not a single witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin” is one of the most recognizable lines from the Potter franchise. This quote set the stage to paint Slytherin house as Death Eaters in waiting, fickle and power hungry, but how true is that statement and how much bearing should it have on the core of Slytherin identity? This panel addresses the issues of narrator bias and logical flaws in presenting a case for the merits of being a Slytherin, while providing counterpoints to common misconceptions and misinformation about what being a Slytherin really means. Check your assumptions at the door and take a closer look at what wearing the green and grey actually says about a person.
