Anxiety, Depression and a Drug Called Fandom
Fandom has been used for years as an outlet for emotional turmoil and as an escape from the stresses and negativity of every day life. Many can say that fandom has helped them through the hardest times in their lives, and those suffering from depression and anxiety (as well as many other forms of distress) have found solace in communities, writing, drawing, and participating in fandom in a variety of ways. In the age of the internet this has become even more prevalent with people forming support groups within their fandoms. This panel will discuss the positive and negative points of using fandom as a coping mechanism, both from a personal and a psychological point of view.

Eros, Thanatos, and Captain Jack Harkness
Freud theorized that humanity is conflicted by two distinct drives: Eros, the inclination to seek love, and Thanatos, the inclination to seek death. While the rest of humanity may find these drives incompatible, there is one 51st century Time Agent that lives in perfect harmony with both Love and Death: Captain Jack Harkness. This panel will discuss how Jack Harkness’ immortality allows him to defy this elemental statute of Freudian psychology.

Snape: Not The Hero We Deserve
Snape has largely been considered a heroic character within the Potter fandom, with apologists going so far as to suggest that he did nothing wrong. However, anyone who reads the books with a critical eye knows that Severus Snape, one of the most well-written and interesting characters of the series, was a complete toolshed. This panel, which will be open to screaming and boos from the audience, is designed to separate impressions of Snape's value as a literary character from his values as a person within the books.

Whether you have a cabinet at home packed full of fandom teas or have no experience with loose leaf or blended teas at all, this panel will help you dip your toe in and find fellow brew enthusiasts. Engaging in Positive Fandom: A Discussion
These days, fandom can be really exciting. Creators get instant feedback, fans can interact with the people they admire, and both interactions can create inspiring and fulfilling relationships. But how do we make sure to encourage those relationships to remain positive? What are appropriate and inappropriate ways to be a fan or have fans? How do fans remain positive and passionate without tipping into idolatry and obsession, and how do creators engage their audience without taking advantage of admiration and devotion?

These are going to be difficult questions to answer, and the leadership of LeakyCon and the HP Alliance have been looking for a way forward. This group of fans and creators want to hear your thoughts and ideas on the subject, as well as share some of their own experiences and thoughts. Improving the world of fan engagement for everyone is important, and we want to start the conversation on how to do it right here, right now, with you.

The Dumbledore Debate
In what was considered a controversial move by many, JK Rowling “outed” Albus Dumbledore as a gay man in October of 2007 during her reading of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at Carnegie Hall. Reactions from the public met a wide range of emotion, but overall, it appeared that many people were pleased that Rowling had made the choice to divulge yet another piece of canon information to the ever-hungry fans. The decision to disclose this information in the way that she did, however, did sparked a debate that still rages among fans today. Should Rowling have revealed the beloved professor’s sexuality within the seven books of the series or was what she did enough? The panelist will continue this debate and invite those in attendance to join in on the discussion as well.
