The Hobbit from Book to Film: Has Peter Jackson Crafted Another Masterpiece or Jumped the Shark?
The latest Hobbit installment, Desolation of Smaug, has fans in an uproar over departures from the book: new characters, scenes worthy of a theme park, love triangles in a book originally written with no female characters, dwarves who now not only confront the Dragon, but balance for a while on his nose... What is a Tolkien fan to think? What drives these artistic decisions when translating a fantasy book to its film form? Is Jackson's version too hot, too cold, or just right? Come debate!

Shakespeare VS. Sondheim: The Broadway Battle
In the world of Broadway and the West End, people are often drawn to the show-stopping songs and exquisite dances of the musical. Even if a person is not a “hardcore” theatre fan, many know the lyrics to songs from shows such as Wicked, West Side Story, and Evita. However, most people aren’t very familiar with plays past The Crucible or Equus. In this roundtable discussion, we intend to discuss the accessibility of a play versus a musical, the disparity between the two genres, and why such a battle exists in the first place. In case things get a little too heated, we have a few sing-alongs planned as well!

Disabilities in YA
Come discuss how and if disabilities are represented in YA literature. With a focus on The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Harry Potter, take an indepth look and theorize on how a disabled person would be required to adapt in these other universes. What would happen to a disabled citizen of Panem? Would this effect the reaping? What if a muggle born who was disabled was invited to Hogwarts, would they be required to be cured before admittance? Does being able to choose a faction help the disabled assimilate?

The Human Marvel: Complex Heroes of the Marvelverse
The Marvel Comics Universe has exploded onto movie screens in recent years with the Avengers blockbuster and affiliated movies. Comics have been around pretty much as long as fandom has, so why the recent explosion in popularity? Marvel brings a unique and relatable humanity to their heroes, with depictions of disability, characters of varying sexualities, women that are not sidekicks, and dynamic motives/personalities. In this panel, we will discuss the mechanics behind what makes the Marvel-verse so appealing, tackling questions like why Loki is simultaneously irresistible and abhorrent, why Bucky Barnes is so vital to the Captain America movieverse, and how Iron Man turns the billionaire playboy trope on its head. We will also look into what we want to see moving forward and discuss recent progress in representation with Young Avengers and the new Miss Marvel.
